What is the Bible?
The Holy Bible is a set of writings that has been compiled as a whole as the supernatural revelation of the Word of God. Written by about 40 writers, it is constructed in two parts, the Old Testament (OT) and the New Testament (NT).
Old Testament
The OT consists of a combination of writings spanning thousands of years of Jewish history. The OT writings depict Jewish customs and theology that are consistent with what we know to be true. They theme of the OT is humanity's alienation from God, and the first part of God's plan of redemption of humanity. The OT writings were completed by the early to mid fifth century BC.
New Testament
After the OT writings, there are a few hundred years of silence, after which we once again have testimony from the Jews that God had intervened in time and space. The OT writings are not silent about the things that would come in the future, so having a second set of testimonies would be expected and looked forward to by the Jews. This subsequent testimony, known as the New Testament (NT), was mainly concerned with one central figure, the foretold Messiah of the OT writings.
The NT details God's unfolding of His plan of redemption and His explicit revelation to humanity through Jesus Christ. It consists of four Gospels, Acts (of the apostles), and epsitles, all written by direct eyewitnesses or friends of eyewitnesses.
